There's a local 1850 point RTT coming up. and I think I'm going to bust out my nids, although my demons are looking pretty appealing.

Thoughts?
I say it looks great. The only think I would even think about is there seems to be a lack of models to hang out with the Ymgarls. Without more normal stealers to at least back them up or perform a similar role, it might be a bit awkward. But I don't really know, I don't actually play Tyranids; I'm just a bad GK player!
ReplyDeleteIs the Swarmlord that great he is worth the points? You could run a Hive Tyrant with armored shell and devourers with Hive Commander. Three Trygons is pretty sick indeed.
ReplyDeleteSolid looking list - I love using Swarmlord...although I might be tempted to drop a Trygon and use the points to buy an extra Tyrant Guard or two and a brood of Stealers to outflank?
ReplyDeleteJust a thought....
Running Swarmlord is less a choice of his points cost vs a standard tyrant, it is more a question of the utility of his extended ability to grant special rules. I think Ymgarls can make great use of preffered enemy and furious charge in some cases and run my elites in a similar set-up when Swarlord hits my lists, though I will say that outside of that, the list gains little from his presence as Trygons hardly ever need FC aqnd certainly don't need acute senses or preferred enemy.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, his own squad could be bigger, that way, in a pinch, they could just use the special rules. Overall, though, running Nids, more than any book I have ever used, is really more about your tabletop experience and how you make things work and jive together. I say playtest and evaluate before the tourney if you have the time, but I would love to read one more blog where Nids are tourney wimnners!
I'm inclined to suggest dropping the Swarmlord and replacing it and its Tyrant Guard with a Tyranid Prime, one unit of Hive Guard with a couple of Venomthropes, and Regeneration upgrades on all the other monsters.
ReplyDeleteRegen almost never pays for itself in my experience. It is just so rare that people leave something like a partially dead Trygon hanging around.
ReplyDeleteMy experience is that Regeneration pays for itself whether you get lucky and actually regenerate, or simply suck far more firepower than strictly necessary to kill. It needs to be in combination with the Spore Cloud's Cv5+ though, since the combination of the saving throw and regeneration means the Trygon can recover from what gets through the saves.
